Bar on 59th
by Alisa Childers

Album: Alisa Childers

I met Jesus in a bar on 59th
He spoke of a kingdom, a proposal of some kind
I thought it was the alcohol
Or the cigarette smoke crawling up concrete walls
But He wasn't talking politics, wasn't partisan or anything
He wasn't what I thought he'd be, but He was talking to me

And I think He's after me
He's around every corner like a ghost in my dreams
More than a painting at the church from when I was fifteen
I get the feeling He wants me

A few days later I saw Him again
In a dim lit room with dancing girls selling poison apples to lonely men
I thought it was the neon hall or the flashing lights jumping off the disco ball
I didn't think He'd be in a place like this
Thought I was someone He'd be angry with
I broke a cold sweat as I hit the door
Didn't look back, I can't take anymore

I was walking home from work and at the corner I looked up
He tossed a nickel in a homeless man's tin can cup
I screamed at Him and said I've never been a good girl
He just smiled and said.... I didn't come to heal the well

I met a girl going through her own kind of hell
I didn't know what to say, didn't have a great story to tell
I just sat back in my chair and thought of how I've been brought to life
And started with....
I met Jesus in a bar on 59th
