You Were There
by The Protest

Album: Great Lengths

I can't believe that through everything you stood by me
I fell away but you grabbed my hand and led the way
And all this time my heart was locked but you had the key
And all my life I was in the dark but you made me see
The light shines through the night

Through the endless rain
And through the darkest nights
You were there, I know you were there with me
And down every road
When I felt so alone
You were there, you were there with me

I cling to the words you spoke to me, you breathed in me
I never felt a love so strong that runs so deep
And all this time I heard you calling out my name through the storm
And all my life I've been running away but I can't run anymore
So I fall into your arms

Through the endless rain
And through the darkest nights
You were there, I know you were there with me
And down every road
When I felt so alone
You were there, you were there with me

And though my soul may grow weary and tired
I find my strength as I step through the fire

Through the endless rain
And through the darkest nights
You were there, I know you were there with me
And down every road
When I felt so alone
You were there, you were there with me

With "You Were There", we wanted to write a straight-up worship song. The lyrics and music are pretty straight forward and that's what we wanted. God is with all of us. Even if you don't know who he is, he knows you. It's truly amazing. God always comes through and this band has seen it time and time again. This song is about God coming through and leading us through the darkness. One of my favorite verses in scripture is Deuteronomy 31:6 "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you." God is with us.
