Mute

Album: Mute

Deafness has silenced the breath of the mute
Yet the prudent stay muted of sounds for the deaf
The world holds its breath
As it is buried drop by drop
Under the flood of ignore-trance complacency
They dig their own graves, but greed will scribe its name on their tombstones
As they drown silently in fantasy
Affluence has come at the price of open throat surgery
Playing operation on the oppressed
Removing their voice boxes without buzzing the sides
of awareness or compassion
And there is no insurance for this doctors' fee
Benevolent wallets are barricaded by selective hearing and stock protected heavily invested bank accounts
And we still don't hear

We remained deaf through the fungus smoke rising out of Hiroshima
Like a giant question mark after the word Justice

We remained deaf when the Nike corporation was found exploiting
Child labor and underpaid sweat shops abroad
But we still just do it

We remained deaf through Columbine, asking,
'How could this happen' only to
return our children to the coddling hands of
pop culture demands
to be raised by a society raised on death

And the deafness continues
Regardless of the flapping lips and waving arms of the growling stomachs
We push mute on everyday
They are muted but they are not destroyed
For we are one
Their struggle is our struggle
Their pain our pain
Their blood our veins
Their breath our lungs
Their pulse our life
Their end our death
Because humanity cannot severe itself from humans

We cannot just run away from what we cannot hear, but must train our ears
To listen to the silenced voices dying in the streets, villages and work camps
We walk through every day
This is a breath for the mute, this is a sound for the deaf
