The Scapegoat (Give a Goat)
by David Bowden

Album: Give a Goat - SIngle

A small string of islands
With a population over ninety
million
The land mass of Arizona
And as many poor as the populace of California
Millions without Vocation
Millions facing Malnutrition
Million lacking Education
Millions, victims of crippling Migration
and she is only one

The scapegoat she
equates ownings with her
belated sowing still
awaiting growing
no videotapes showing her
always groaning because her
profit rates are slowing
inflations plateauing
desecrations bestowing
underrated undergoings, she
scraped her owings together to
escape going under as
The scapegoat of culture

You can
Blame agriculture
The guilty seed
Blame economics
and governmental greed
Blame generations
outsourced over
outstretched seas
Blame education's
unreachable remedial fees
but She
the scapegoat
is blamed for these.

She the scapegoat
that old poverty quote
that gets stuck in our throats
until we cough up our bank notes
leaving her and our conscience in some
remote estate
we create false devotion for our
recreational emotions
our great gloats, but she remains
the scapegoat

We ignore our tardiness and absences
when we come in to tend to these injustices
We barge in to situations
in nations, locations, relations, and populations we've never met
filled with
frustrations, complications, regulations we'd never guess
yet we take
combinations of donations funding operations by standards of capitalistic innovations not taking into account
the conversations we never had
the consultations we never asked
the invitations never passed
the implications and aftermath
the generations coming after that
we just grab the cash
make a dash
to place a stash
of rations
or recycled trash
not asking what will happen when
the charity leaves, when
the cameras cease, when
the cash depletes
What happens to the people
who's feet stay in the countries we leave
Inadvertently we
promote the
scapegoat

But there is hope
for her
the scapegoat of culture
It's outside the scope
of hand-outs and drop-offs
These people need a rope
a hand out of the troughs
A way to do more than cope
to reverse the slope of downward decline
until the facts and stats of poverty attacks
have been rewrote
for her the scapegoat of culture

And this suture will sustain long into to the future
so she won't have to be the scapegoat any longer
but we will provide the goat
for her to escape going to the slaughter
as the scapegoat of culture

One goat
replaces unemployment with means
replaces hardships with ease
replaces lack of opportunity with the ability to seize
one's one reprise
One goat means
she can now leave
the hacienda regime
the plantation scheme
the poverty cycle's nightmarish dream
One goat means
she is provided with
fresh milk to squeeze
out of her 4-legged freeze box three
times a day
One goat means
she is now free
to take milk, meat, and cheese
to market, use manure to
fertilizer for her own
organic garden
One goat means
she has the keys
to unlock the bolted screens
formally keeping
her from providing her
children with school fees
her grandchildren with proper feed
and herself with medication for a treatable disease
One goat means
she has received
the gift of self-sufficiency
the right to sustainability
a life that's now empowering
her family, community, and entire country

She escaped going to the slaughter
as the scapegoat of culture

But millions are still left
scraping slowing waiting for hope

it's time we take the quotes that poverty wrote
and promote our throats to becoming a voice of the remote
to pay in full the charges of our largest neglected promissory note
it's time we joined together to live and devote
ourselves to connote a new kind of hope
that helps civilizations live not just cope
that will keep generations afloat
that will change the popular vote
from many who cry to many who gloat
that will demote
all superficial forms of charity, until all take note
that we have made change with lasting clarity
it's time to
Give a Goat
