What Light Remains Light45 What Light Remains - Single (2022) |
I ate my bread off of my Father's table
I turned and fled as soon as I was able
I'm almost dead, and now I'm coming back home
Put Your breath upon my flame
Give me measure from Your table
Tried to make it on my own
Each and every time unable
Tell me that I'm not alone
Take me back into my home
Prodigal, so some would say
I need to seek out what light remains
Hey!
When I left thought I was in control
Each and every day with a different love
Drank every meal with a silver cup
All the money ran away and my friends dried up
I was feeling oh, so low
With every step I wanna pull me in
Company I keep with the mud and sin
I was feeling oh so low
What will they think if I go home
And beg 'em for crumbs from the kitchen floor?
Before I reach the farthest gate
I see my Father's face
I see the face of Grace
Hey!
Restored now to the table, oh! (Forgive me brother now!)
Almost like I was never gone (Somebody tell me how?)
What kind of love have I fallen upon
That's swallowed me whole?
Put Your breath upon my flame
Give me measure from Your table
Tried to make it on my own
Each and every time unable
Tell me that I'm not alone
Take me back into my home
I will seek and call Your name
Each and every time I'm able
Put Your breath upon my flame
Give me measure from Your table
Tried to make it on my own
Each and every time unable
Put Your breath upon my flame
Put Your breath upon my flame
Prodigal, so some would say
I need to seek out what light remains
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Lyrics and Commentary
The first verse is the son describing when he walked away from his Father's table.
I ate my bread off of my Father's table
I turned and fled as soon as I was able
I'm almost dead, and now I'm coming back home
The choruses are a plea to his Father to restore his hope.
Put Your breath upon my flame
Give me measure from Your table
Tried to make it on my own
Each and every time unable
Tell me that I'm not alone
Take me back into my home
Prodigal, so some would say
I need to seek out what light remains
The extended bridge before the chorus explores the thoughts running through the son's mind as he is walking toward his childhood home.
When I left thought I was in control
Each and every day with a different love
Drank every meal with a silver cup
All the money ran away and my friends dried up
I was feeling oh, so low
With every step I wanna pull me in
Company I keep with the mud and sin
I was feeling oh so low
What will they think if I go home
And beg 'em for crumbs from the kitchen floor?
Before I reach the farthest gate
I see my Father's face
I see the face of Grace
The last verse explores the thoughts of the son as he is sitting back at his Father's table.
Restored now to the table, oh! (Forgive me brother now!)
Almost like I was never gone (Somebody tell me how?)
What kind of love have I fallen upon
That's swallowed me whole?
