He was 19 years old when he first taught and directed at the James Cleveland Workshop his musical composition, "He Saved A Wretch Undone" which was featured on the live recording from the 1973 workshop in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1976 Dennis Byrd taught his composition "Take It To God In Prayer" at the James Cleveland Gospel Workshop in Kansas City, Missouri.
