Hit the Altar

Album: It Won't Be Long

My papaw pastored Pisgah Mountain Mission
A little country church up on the hill
Every Sunday mornin' he went early
To pray down in the altar for God's will

One Sunday mornin' praying in the spirit
He lost the track of time as folks came in
So one by one they joined him in the altar
Just prayin' for revival to begin

So it became a Sunday morn tradition
To pray before we ever sang our songs
The congregation grew it doubled quickly
As folks brought friends and family along

Hit the altar for a change
Pray for power in Jesus' name
Things will never be the same
If you hit the altar for a change

One Sunday mornin' I saw Pisgah's town drunk
Walk the aisle and give his life to Christ
And right behind him came the mountain madam
Oh but, she left with a new man in her life

Now papaw grew much older and was feeble
His voice grew weak so he had to retire
But if you ask anyone on Pisgah Mountain
Ah they'll tell you that my papaw lit the fire

Hit the altar for a change
Pray for power in Jesus' name
Things will never be the same
If you hit the altar for a change

Hit the altar for a change
Pray for power in Jesus' name
Things will never be the same
If you hit the altar for a change

Things will never be the same
If you hit the altar for a change
Just hit the altar for a change
