I remember well 10 years before
The war between the states,
How the slaves bent down in sorrow,
In the mornings as they led them
Through the gates,
All but one man, who held his head up high,
I remember well the words that he was
Singing as he faced the morning sky;

I watched him as he laboured; a man of iron will,

Others as they slaved

"Why so proudly do you sing?"
And I will not forget his answer
In a joyful voice that made the heavens ring;
