Album: Wanderer
If home is where the heart is
Then I wonder why I'm lost
If life's what you make it
I wonder what's the cost
What's the cost?
I have built this place on memories
Where I'm still a child or so it seems
But everything always seems so real
Like the fact that
I was terrified of my basement
But there was nothing hiding down there
That my bear couldn't stop
So I held him like a shield
For as long as I had to walk to reach the stairs
But from there we would climb
Reach forward and touch the sky
As the monsters stayed behind us
Our back yard was a castle
Holding all of my secrets
Just between the two of us
With vaulted ceilings
To contain all of my musings
And a dungeon to hide all of my fears
My ears would stayed primed
For dinner time when I could
Hear my grandmother
Calling from the kitchen
When I'd begin to make my way inside
Past the hole that I created
With my ball
And all my drawings on the wall
Down the hall where my pride
Hid in my cupboards
Because it's a humbling feeling
To know that your ability to burn water
Is genetic
But for kicks grandma would let me try anyway
And that was our time
Kraft macaroni and cheese
Called me from the morning
With a step stool to guide
The tools my hands weren't big enough to hold
But all that mattered was that she was holding me
I couldn't see over the table top
Until I was older
But the forts I would make under there were
Legendary
Endless saturdays hidden under comforters
Warm enough to surround me with all of the snuggles
To make up for the friends that I didn't have
Cartoons teaching me physics from the screen
Lessons like
"Don't try things from the movies"
Gravity is real
And it will steal all of the thunder that you summoned
With the hammer you stole from the shed
But keep trying
And don't let your head swell
Ego leads to losing things
Too valuable to replace
And the consequences you will
Have to face just aren't worth it
You don't have room in your closet
For all of your boogy men
And at some point you will have to go to
The basement again but
Then you will be stronger
And finally that
Home is where your heart is
Every single part
And not just the ones artfully
Recreated to suit
Your designated nostalgia trip
It is All of the times that it was
Ripped from your chest
And then when you did your best
To put it back together
It stands for all of the dreams
That turned to nightmares
And stare at you from your corner
For every sweater turned monster
Inside of your head
And all the ones that slept under your bed
With the bear that hid them all
For the moment when your tall ceilings became
Prisons that you locked yourself in
And the numbers you forgot you could call
Your home is where you are honest
Because there is no use in trying to hide it
When its just the floorboards hoarding
The space you wish that you could share
But there is where you will find yourself
That child praying for superman
And the parent that came holding the letter
For all of the ambitions
That became the demolition to
Your downfall
For all of your schemes
That demeaned your foe
And to the place that you can go
So you don't have to pretend again
A wandering heart leads to a lost soul
And sometimes
I feel like I just want to be whole again
I just want to be told again
That everything is going to be ok
It I will
Because it is
Because as long as
There's a home
There is a way
I've been wandering quite some time
And I wonder I'll realize
That home is where you make it
That I am going to make it
We are going to make it
I've been wandering quite some time
And I wonder I'll realize
That home is where you make it
We are going to make it
That I am going to make it home
